Replacing the old 48V power supply

In the morning of March 20th we started to replace the old 48 Volt battery power supply in the Houweling Telecommuseum, the old charger from the 50ies worked without much fuss but caused more and more concerns during yearly inspections, now it’s function has been taken over by two smaller power supplies.
We started with switching everything off in the cellar, removing the fuses and uncoupling the cables to the rest of the building. In the Philips room power will be supplied by smaller 48 V supply, the Ericson room is “fed” by a supply placed in one of the racks. One wouldn’t expected that everything only “pulls” a few Ampères (contrary to the old days when the building was crammed with technology).
